Yoga Therapy:
Another summer is nearly passed and for many the change of season foreshadows a
myriad of other changes in life circumstances. Adjusting routines and activities
is often a challenge, and at the same time, an opportunity. This can be a great
time to mindfully re-commitment to the practices such as Yoga
and Meditation, that can form the foundation of a life well lived.
The
larger commitments in our lives such as our relationships, work and parenting
come with claims on our time and resources that can seem to overwhelm. Most of
these obligations are, or at least appear to be inevitable and non-negotiable.
When we are feeling well and at ease it is these very aspects that can provide
us with the joy and fulfillment we seek from these facets of life. However, when
we are depleted in energy, feeling stressed and overwhelmed these aspects of our
lives can generate resentment, frustration and other consequences that
can create ripples of negativity throughout our lives.
At
the crux of Yoga practice and philosophy is the realization that the events of
our lives are not the final determining factor in determining our experience of
happiness and peace of mind. Some Yogis have even defined stress as our
resistance to what is at any moment. Unhelpful habits and addictive
behaviors or other unskillful strategies of “coping” at times further resistance
and color our experience in ways that take us away from the moment. Our Yoga practice
can be the vehicle by which we may restore the sense of physical health
and balance, mental ease ease and wellness that again allows a sense of
fulfillment to overcome those negative feelings stress and dis-ease bring. Giving
regular and proper attention to our bodies, minds and supporting our growth and
evolution go a long way toward recovering and expanding upon our deeper
sense of well being. A mindful, balanced and responsible approach to
our own self care, therefore, is not selfish or indulgent as we sometimes may
feel, but instead the means by which we serve the self that serves. A
little time to return to balance and health can go a long way, allowing us to
return to life invigorated and able to expand upon our contributions to
family, work and community with greater joy and enthusiasm.
Yoga practice:
Back to Basics:
Yogis understand that
Breathing is basic to life and our rhythm and placing of the breath in our
reflects our state of mind and emotions. The struggle of a busy and stressed mind in beginning Yoga and
meditation practices to let go of struggle. Changing the breath with
these simple techniques is the beginning of gaining the most out of Yoga
practice.
1: Belly Breathing
|
Continue for 2-4 minutes at first. If you get tense or uncomfortable slow the pace
|
Lie down in comfortable position. Keep your knees bent, feet flat and parallel at hips width to help keep the low back comfortable
|
Place your hands over your belly close to your navel.
|
Inhale into your belly. Feel the hand rise and fingers spread gently as the belly expands with the inhale. The diaphragm draws down into the belly to inflate the lungs to created this effect.
|
Breathe out with the belly falling in towards the spine. |
2:
3 Part Breath
As you master abdominal breathing you can begin to explore Yogic 3 part
breath. This is the technique for creating a full Yogic breath that is used in
asana(Yoga posture) practice and can ideally becomes a more habitual and
expansive way to breath in your life.. The inhalation and exhalation become
deeper and flow more easily over time.
|
Begin by slowly taking slow deep breaths, relaxing your body. Repeat the whole process for five to six times
|
Now inhale a lot of air in slowly to fill your belly up. Your belly should rise up like a balloon. Hold this position for a few seconds and exhale drawing the belly inwards ensure there is no air left.
|
In the second step, inhale deeply to fill up the belly. Inhale a bit more to fill up air in your rib cage. When you exhale, exhale air from your rib cage and then from your belly.
|
In the third step, inhale deeply
to fill up your belly and rib cage with air. Inhale a bit more to fill up
your heart center (area around the heart) with air. When you exhale, exhale
air from the heart center, then the rib cage and then the belly.
|
The benefits are for many quite immediate and apparent. If they aren't, don’t be discouraged as you begin practice. Settling down to try to calm your
mind and relax your body can reveal the effects of stresses you have ignored.
Change takes time and often support and clarification are needed so seek out
teachers and other practitioners as you need and desire.
Practiced as directed these
techniques are safe and effective for most people. If you have any physical or
mental health issues or vulnerabilities or experience any negative effects
please consult with your healthcare provider and seek some individual
instruction.
